The Tender Bits
Let's dive into the uncomfortable topic of vulnerability. Like ill-fitting underwear, it makes me squirm.
This whole social media sharing and self-promotion thing doesn’t come naturally to me. It's as if something is pinching my tender bits. It is the classic predicament for introverted entrepreneurial artists: the need to expose your work to the world, share your inspiration and creative process as a genuine human being (I am not a bot!), evaluate your self-worth, negotiate compensation, and endure repeated rejections. You must be willing to reveal yourself and present your work with a humble smile, even as your audience passes judgment. Pinch and squirm.
Join me as I delve into vulnerability and strive to find a way to handle it. From what I've gathered, there seem to be three ways of responding to feelings of vulnerability. Two of them are destructive: Aggression and withdrawal. The third is constructive: Curiosity. Aggression pushes people away, and withdrawal hinders entrepreneurs (see previous paragraph). On the other hand, curiosity fosters meaningful conversations, understanding, and opportunities.
As an introvert, withdrawal is my go-to reaction when faced with the squirmy discomfort of vulnerability. But I know curiosity is a more healthy and beneficial approach to just about every situation.
Making art is a rejuvenating process for me. It motivates me to explore opportunities and be curious about what’s next. No doubt, there will be squirmy situations ahead, but I’ll face them with curiosity.
